MARGARITA EUGENIA GUTIÉRREZ is the former head of the physicochemical analysis laboratory, founder of the Biogeochemistry Group and current coordinator of the Hazardous Waste Program of the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM). She is also currently an environmental consultant for Grupo México (the third largest cooper producer in the world) and other important mining companies. She collaborates with National Environmental Authorities to develop a multidisciplinary approach for regulation and study cases. Her research has strongly focused on the recovery of polluted sites, studying the molecular process of contaminants in the soil-water systems and developing environmentally friendly technology.  Her recent publications include:  Evaluation of the potential of indigenous calcareous shale for neutralization and removal of arsenic and heavy metals of acid mine drainage.
